Liberia: 'No Apology, No Regrets for Burning Doe'

Monrovia — Former leader of the Independent National Patriotic Front of Liberia (INPFL) says he owes no apology to anyone for killing former President Samuel K. Doe.

He claimed that the former President murdered his kinsmen in Nimba County and other parts of the country.

But the family of slain President Doe has ruled out any possibility of reconciling with Senator Johnson.

Speaking to reporters at a news conference Thursday, Mr. Johnson said his kinsmen warned him not to apologize to the family of the late President on grounds that he and the Doe family reconciled sometime ago in a church in Nigeria.

The Nimba Country lawmaker reiterated warning by his kinsmen that if he apologizes to the Doe family, they would impeach him from the senate.

"Therefore, to apologize to them again, is not possible," the former rebel leader maintained.

Mr. Johnson warned that any attempt by the family of the late Doe to attack him, he would mobilize his men to retaliate.

During his testimony at the TRC hearings Tuesday, Senator Johnson explained that he captured the late President Doe at the Freeport of Monrovia after he allegedly violated a truce entered into between him and the late President.

Mr. Johnson said former President Doe was taken to the Caldwell base of the INPFL where he died and was buried. Thereafter, his body was exhumed to allow foreign journalists take photos of the remains and also to disprove rumors that he was eaten by INPFL fighters.

He said Gen. Varney objected to the reburial of Mr. Doe's remains after the foreign journalists completed their work.

Meanwhile, the family of slain President Samuel Doe has ruled out any possibility of reconciling with the Senator.

The brother of the slain president told Star Radio that the act by Mr. Johnson to burn the body of their brother shows he does not deserve forgiveness.

Mr. Jackson Doe told reporters that the family was highly saddened by the startling revelation that the late President's body was burnt.

He said if former general Johnson, now senator, had shown regrets for his action, the Doe family would have pardoned him.

Mr. Doe said the burning of their brother's body would deny him the opportunity of being honored by President Sirleaf as done to the late William Tolbert.

Mr. Jackson Doe said he would appear before the TRC when called upon to use the opportunity to explain in details the capture and subsequent death of his brother.

With all due respect Mr Jackson Doe need to forget about forgiving senator Johnson. How many families have he Jackson Doe apologise to? Look I personally have friends who are related to the late President so I don't like to say anything that will bring bad feelings between us. So Jackson Doe should shut the F__k up.

To you, Mr. Jackson Doe, you better shut your mouth up and enjoy your stollen wealth or else you'll die like your cold blooded killer brother if you and your Krahn elements don't stop bothering mr. Johnson. If you'll want the recurence of the civil war, you'll go ahead and start it, but beware of the aftermath. A hint to a wise is quite sufficient.

one question for the latter comment, by Mr Joegbo: what do you say to the one time notorous killer Doe, who, during his short-lived regime, masacred thousands of innocent Liberians, appart from hundreds of security personnel from Mr. Johnson's home county? Lots of you guys who make these comments are lacking objectivities and are mono-sided in your approaches to the Liberian crisis. you guys are bent on creating confussions and commotions in the country and have forgoten in a short period of time what transpired in Liberia. I bet some of you you just heard the news or read about the civilwar but didn't really see it. Those of us who saw the physical war and at some point became victims at the brutal hands of both the Doe and the Taylor,we're very afraid of the recurrence. But if you disgruntled elements and war mongers still anticipate more war, so be it; but you need think twice.
