Abuja — Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) is to review examination practices in the nation's tertiary institutions as a way of restoring the past glory of the educational sector.
In a statement by the commission, ICPC Chairman, Justice Emmanuel Ayoola dropped this hint at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State at the unveiling of Resource Centre named after him at the Faculty of Law of the University.
Justice Ayoola told the gathering that converged at the Oduduwa Hall of the university that, ICPC, as an integrity institution, believes in the transformation of the society as one of the easiest ways of confronting the menace of corruption.
"We believe that we must transform the culture. The culture of institutions must change, that is why we are embarking on system review of examination practices in our universities and tertiary institutions."The time has come that the qualifications our students received in our universities becomes credible again. "We are going to insist that student know why he has not done what he should have done in our universities. Their must be openness in our examination practices, that is the only way credibility can be restored to our educational system," Justice Ayoola said.
While reiterating that transformation of the society was a must in the fight against corruption in Nigeria, the retired Supreme Court Justice said, "I said few days ago that if we were to put emphasis on the criminal justice system, we would have to find 140 million Wale Akoni SAN to prosecute 140 million Nigerians."
