Nigeria: Aliyu Vows to Eradicate Education Backwardness

SENATOR Nuhu Aliyu (PDP, Niger North) has pledged to contribute his quota to the reversal of the education backwardness of the people of his constituency.

Aliyu in an interview shortly after the presentation of vehicles and cash to party officials in his senatorial zone also denied any connection between his recent philanthropic gestures to a possible fourth term in the Senate or a run for the governorship of the State.

The presentation of eight cars each worth N5.2 million and N350,000 to each of the eight Local Government PDP chapters within the Niger North senatorial zone was held in Kontogara.

Towards realizing his goal of combating the education backwardness of the people, Aliyu said that he had created a foundation which he said would administer the endowment that would come from him for that goal.

He, however, affirmed that his initial focus would be towards members of the PDP.

He said: "In this particular state, my zone, that is zone c is the most disadvantaged educationally, and that is why a Committee has been set up to try as much as possible to get more of our people in classes. So, this foundation is one of those things that will provide facilities for better learning. So, it is not just money, though it is money that can do all these things."

"That is why I have created a board of trustees who know about the disadvantages of this zone," Senator Aliyu who is also chairman of the Senate Committee on Security and National Intelligence said.

Asked if the gestures were aimed at some political goals of his, he said:

"I am not looking for anything. When I was preparing this contribution some people said that he is preparing to be governor of Niger State, but look at me at my age, I don't want to be governor at all, let me be where I am, the forum of elders and that is the Senate. But for the governorship or anything else, not me."

But pressed on a possible fourth term in the Senate, Senator Aliyu said:

"It is not for Nuhu Aliyu. I have done three terms and that is twelve years and I don't think we ever had a Senator from this zone who had three terms.

"Already I have left history behind and I cherish what I have done and that is why having stayed for this length of time, I must have to leave something."

I must leave a legacy so that people will not say that he just wasted our twelve years, he has left nothing behind. I want to leave a legacy."
