The Libyan Leader Muammar Al Gaddafi has reportedly pledged US$30 million dollars to assist the country in its food security drive, especially to accelerate rice production as the staple food of Liberia.
The Libyan leader vowed to assist the postwar society to regain food security in West Africa. The Libyan reportedly promised that the assistance would help to make rice as a locally available commodity for sustained food security.
It is earmarked that Liberia through this initiative will replicate Libya in a manner and style as one of the countries that have achieved self sufficiency and surplus as a notable example in Africa.
Col. Gaddafi reportedly made the promises in Libya during the two days visit of President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and her entourage to that African country.
A member of President Sirleaf's delegation to Libya, Dr. Ketterkumeh Murray yesterday made the disclosure to a group of journalists who were attending a media workshop in the auditorium of the University of Liberia main campus on capitol Hill in Monrovia
Dr. Murray is from the lower House of the Liberian parliament and serves as chairman on the executive.
He further said that he was invited on the trip by president Sirleaf to accompany her to Libya.
"As you may know she had one agenda, Libyan Leader had probably another agenda. And I was there to always advocate what I believe to be in the national interest. That does not mean that the other interest was inimical to the national interest," averred Dr. Murray.
In Libya, Chairman Murray said , President Sirleaf was trying to explore means by which Col. Gaddafi who has six million people and an oil revenue in excess of $25 billions annually could collaborate with us in our agricultural and technical developments as well as bring some of their chemical plants to Liberia .
