Benin — Chief Nosakhare Isekhure, the Isekure of Benin has said that the leaders of the Edo South senatorial district, led by the Benin Monarch, Oba Erediuwa, would not accept any attempt by the state assembly to impeach governor Osunbor.
The Isekure of Benin, Chief Nosakhare Isekure said this has become imperative following rumours making the rounds that some members of the assembly had concluded arrangements to impeach the governor.
Chief Isekure who addressed assembly members and local government council chairmen from Edo south senatorial district yesterday in his palace asked them not to have anything to do with the impeachment as the governor within a short period of time has accomplished what his predecessor could not achieve in eight years.
He also hinted that the sharing of the proposed 12 additional Local Governments by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which would be created in Edo state, should not be shared equally with the other two senatorial districts because of the numerical strength of the Benins.
On this note, Chief Isekure urged the Local Government Chairmen of the seven Local Government Councils in the South senatorial district to ensure that none of their lands is ceded to any area, just as he described as embarrassing the ceding of some of the oil wells belonging to Edo state to Delta state.
He regretted that the people of the zone had been marginalized in the past years "even though we are the majority in the state", stressing that it would be a travesty of justice if the alleged moves by leaders of the other two senatorial districts are allowed to have their way.
"People are now clamouring that even the twelve that INEC has proposed to create in Edo state from which we are supposed to benefit from it because we have been marginalized in the past years, are saying that we will share it equally amongst the three senatorial district.
"We will not compromise our position and we must be given eight Local Governments because we have the figure to justify it. If they do not want to give it to us, they should as well keep it. We do not see how equitable such a sharing formula is and we will accept that," he stated.
However, he urged the Council Chairmen to ensure that all their lands are protected . According to him, "It is embarrassing that our lands are being ceded to Delta state every day. The Oba of Benin is worried about this situation and that is why you must provide security and ensure that our lands are protected."
Responding on behalf of others, the Chairman of Egor Local Government Council, Hon. Crosby Eribo commended the palace of the Oba of Benin for conveying the meeting, and assured that they would continue to follow the instruction of the leaders and elders of the area, noting that some of them had been able to provide link roads in their respective areas so as to guide against intruders.
