31 August 2008

RESIDENTS of Yoruba Road in Minna, Niger State woke up last Monday to see their area already taken over by on-lookers who had come to see a sports utility vehicle, SUV, parked along the road. The residents trooped to the scene to catch a glimpse of what was happening.

They were surprised to see a dead body behind the steering of the Toyota Land Cruiser with registration number Lagos LC 979AAA parked off the road with the head of the corpse resting on the steering as if he was only taking a rest.

Who is this man? What was his mission in the area? What killed him? These were among other numerous questions asked by the on-lookers. A report was immediately made at the Central Police Station where policemen were drafted to the area.

Sunday Vanguard reliably gathered that the SUV had been noticed parked along the road at about 8.00 p.m on Sunday, a day to the discovery.

As people passed along the road, nobody gave the vehicle any attention even with the man already dead behind the steering thereby staying overnight unnoticed.

One of the on-lookers told our correspondent that he actually passed by the vehicle Sunday night and thought the same man behind the steering was only relaxing with his head resting on the steering and his side door open not knowing that he was dead.

The man's corpse was immediately evacuated from the SUV into a police pick-up van and deposited at the mortuary of the Minna General Hospital while the vehicle was driven to the police station for safety.

The state police spokesman, ASP Richard Oguche Adamu, said the deceased was a driver to the owner of the SUV and was only in transit from Benin-City, Edo State to Kebbi State where the owner resides.

The police could not however immediately ascertain what his mission was in Minna but was suspected to have interrupted his journey in Minna for the night with the hope of continuing the trip the second day through Kontagora and then to Kebbi State.

Oguche said with the handset found on him, the police were able to reach out to the victim's relatives and his master who promised to come to Minna to collect the corpse. The police spokesman ruled out any foul play on the death. He, however, said that investigation into the mysterious death was on.
