In Akwa Ibom state based businessman and philanthropist, Mr. S. F. Idowu, has donated materials and food stuff worth millions of Naira to the Bakassi returnees currently being camped at Enwang in Mbo Local Government council area of Akwa Ibom state.
Presenting the items to the local government council officials who received them on behalf of the returnees, at Mbo, Idowu said he was moved by the pathetic situation of the displaced persons, and wondered why Nigerians should allow their nationals to undergo such trauma due to no fault of theirs.
Nigeria, according to the philanthropist, should take a cue from civilized countries of the world like the United States of America, Britain ,France and other countries which made ample preparation for contingences like this for their nationals were such to happen to them.
He wondered why Nigeri, a country that prided itself as the giant of Africa, could be spending billion, of Naira on peace keeping missions in another country, while neglecting the welfare of its citizens who were driven out of their ancestral home owing to pronouncement of the international court at the Hague
He, therefore, called on the Federal Government to urgently address the returnees' plight by providing necessary support for their total rehabilitation.
He commended Governor Godswill Akpabio for setting up a high-powered committee to cater for them and called on other pubilc spirited Nigerians, multi national companies operating in the Niger Delta to come to the aid of these unfortunate Nigerians majority of who are from the coastal area of the region.
Items donated by the business mogul include rice, milk, toiletries camping materials, and cash.
