Angola: Peace Environment Boosts Cultural Events

1 September 2008

Luanda — Angola has been registering in the last six years a notable enlargement of governmental activity in the domain of cultural events promotion, in the ambit of a programme to boost culture, extensive to promoters countrywide.

With the achievement of peace on 4 April 2002, through the signing of the Understanding Memorandum, it was opened the space for more funds from the government in cultural activities, mainly in Luanda where more than 10 events of various artistic areas happen weekly.

Compared to a recent past marked by a sole holding of the Carnival and the Angolan Popular Music Festival dubbed "Variante", the cultural events are now diversified and extensive to private business.

With the peace, it was created the administrative conditions to hold festivals for theatre and dance, as well as public fairs for plastic arts throughout the country.

According to the Government Portal, the programme, which was approved in a Cabinet Council session held in 2002, has benefited until 2006 over 900 singular and collective people.
