Uganda: Muloki - Unifier And Father Figure

2 September 2008

Kampala/Jinja/Kanungu — The death of the Kyabazinga of Busoga Henry Wako Muloki has been described by various people as a huge loss to not only Busoga Kingdom, but the whole nation.

Mr Muloki has been described as a father, a great unifier and a man who never discriminated anybody, no matter their political, social or economic biases.

President Museveni yesterday paid tribute to the late Kyabazinga describing him as a very "useful" man who will be greatly missed by his country.

"He was a very good person. However, death is normal. What is important is how you are remembered," Mr Museveni told a rally in Kanungu Trading Centre.

Mr Museveni even tried to draw comparisons between Muloki and Jesus Christ, whom he said is "still remembered because of his good deeds". Mr Museveni suggested he would want to be remembered for poverty eradication, which he said is one of the major reasons for his current tour of the country.

Kaliro Woman MP, who is also a Princess from Busoga Kingdom, Ms Margaret Mbeiza, said, "It is a pity to the people of Busoga and Uganda. Kyabazinga has been the most peaceful cultural leader who did not give government any headache."

Mr Kirunda Kivejinja, the government's information minister, said the Kyabazinga had a clear understanding of issues of Busoga and never divided the people. "He knew how to mix culture and civilisation," he said.

Like Mr Kivejinja, Busoga's Prime Minister, Martin Musumba, said the Kyabazinga has been the symbol of Busoga and unity.

He said Muloki loved his people, kingdom, the Central Government and President Yoweri Museveni. "I remember when I visited him at Mulago Hospital on Saturday, he told me to send his regards to the President".

Bunyoro Kingdom's premier, Mr Emmanuel Aliba, says the Kyabazinga has been a great friend of Bunyoro and that he died at a time when his guidance was most needed on re-uniting all kingdoms, having been the eldest of all.
