Angola: Historians Praise Building of King Ekuikui II Monument

Huambo — Historians based in the central Huambo province Monday expressed satisfaction at the building of a monument to homage King Ekuikui II in Bailundo locality.

Launching the first-stone Saturday was the minister of Culture Boaventura Cardoso, who is in Huambo since Friday, on a working visit.

Speaking to ANGOP, the historian and writer Elias Sandjukila, considered of key importance the construction of monument by showing recognition of the government officials in relation to the actions conducted by King Ekuikui II during the wars of resistance against the colonial occupation.

"Despite being the 20th sovereign, since the creation of the Kingdom, Ekuikui II was the most outstanding leader who stood out in the struggles against the colonial invasion which have since then enabled the affirmation and the consequent recognition of Bailundo Kingdom", emphasised the historian.

On the other hand, Pio Tchiwale, also another historian and writer, the monument will allow to revive the past of the sovereign and making the current and the future generations to live according to the ideals defended, in that time, by Ekuikui II.

The Bailundo kingdom, based in Bailundo locality, 82 kilometres off Huambo city, was founded in the XV century, previously known by Halavala.

Kings Katiavala I, Jahulo I, Samandalu, Tchingui I, Tchingui II, Ekuikui I, Numa I, Hundungulo I, Tchissende I, Jungulo, Ngundji, Tchivukuvuku Tchama Tchongonga, Utondossi, Bonji, Bongue, Tchissende II, Vassovava, Katiavala II, Ekongoliohombo, Ekuikui II, Numa II, Moma, Kangovi, Hundungulo II, Mutu Ya Kevela (vice-rei), Tchissende III, Jahulo II, Mussitu, Tchinendele, Kapoko, Numa II, Pessela Tchongolola and Ekuikui III were the sovereigns who have already ruled the Bailundo Kingdom.

Augusto Katchitiopolo (Ekuikui IV) is the current king of Bailundo.
