THE Government has released K46 billion to the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) to prepare for the forthcoming presidential by-election.
ECZ director Dan Kalale said in an interview in Lusaka that the commission was happy that the Government had started releasing the money ahead of the election.
He said that the commission had since started delivering election materials to various districts in readiness for the presiential by-election.
"I can confirm that we received K46 billion for the forthcoming by-election and we are grateful that this money has been released. We are also committed to ensuring that the elections are conducted in a conducive manner," he said.
Mr Kalale said that preparations for the by-election were going on smoothly.
Zambia is supposed to hold the presidential by-election following President Mwanawasa's death.
Recently, acting Republican President Rupiah Banda implored the newly sworn in ECZ chairperson, Florence Mumba to ensure that Zambia held free and fair elections.
Mr Banda stressed that the people of Zambia cherished their freedom and the need for free and fair elections and the commission had the responsibility to guide the public.
