Kenya: Njenga Claims Victory in Thika

Nairobi — An impressive score at the opening nine was what Walter Njenga needed to lift the overall winner's prize during the Nairobi Hospital Golf tournament at the par 72 Thika Sports Club course, at the weekend.

Njenga, who was playing off handicap 17 later reduced to 15, posted 23 points at the front nine that included a number of pars, before firing 20 at the back nine to crown the day with his superb 43 stableford points.

Besides winning the take away prize, the overall winner and the lady winner received some additional prize of an executive clinic voucher at the Nairobi Hospital valued at Sh15,000 each.

Finishing second was J. G. Njoroge with a good combination of 18 and 21 for 39, beating R. K. Nderitu on 19 and 20.

The lady winner, Florence Githiori, fired 21 and 20 for 41 points while the guest prize went to N. Kibuka, also with an impressive 43 points, made up of 20 and 23 points. George Thuo and lady golfer Betty Ndenderu won the nines with 22 and 23 points respectively.

At Railway, Joseph Mburu Muigai clinched the Rosemary Perpetual Trophy after firing a superb 42 stableford points during this year's tournament sponsored by KBC.

Muigai, one of the leading golfers at Railway, fired 24 points in the first nine and 18 at the back nine.

The men's first prize went to S. G. Njoroge on 41 after a countback with M. W. Kinyanjui who took the second prize and the third prize went to S. K. Boit on 40, while Stanley Gikandi on 39 was third after beating E. G. Runo on countback.

Caleb Kositany won the gross on 35 points and the guest prize went to N. Mbuchucha with 38, two points better than A. Kimani, while P. Ngige and R. Mbithi were third and fourth with 35 points.

Cate Mwaura won the ladies' prize with 36 ahead of Wanjiru Karume and Ann Chubi on 35 points.
