Uganda: Court Blocks City Land Sale

Kampala — THE Commercial Court has stopped a Kampala law firm from transferring the ownership of a private piece of land.

The court's registrar, John Haduli, last week ruled that Kasirye, Byaruhanga and Company Advocates should not transfer the property until the case that was filed by Pius Mugalaasi-Mugerwa is concluded.

Mugerwa, through his lawyer John Mike Musisi, dragged the law firm and other individuals to court, complaining that the lawyers refused to transfer the land into his names when he had fully paid the sh820m purchase price.

The land was sold to Mugerwa by Ntwatwa Lule, Fred Lule, Kibalama Kato and Norah Lule, according to an agreement signed on August 14.

The registrar agreed with Mugerwa that there was proof that the property was under the threat of being re-sold by the law firm.

Mugerwa's lawyer submitted in court an e-mail from Andrew Kasirye instructing his partner, Paul Rutisya, to contact a new buyer introduced to him (Kasirye) by Dr. Ntwatwa.

The mail asked Rutisya to conclude a fresh transaction of the property.
