Kenya: VP's Wife Yet to Decide On Allowance

Nairobi — The Vice-President's wife is expected to make a decision on the proposed Sh400,000 monthly allowance on Thursday.

Sources close to Mr Kalonzo Musyoka's wife, Pauline, said the family would decide on the hefty allowance accorded to her by the Government.

Prime Minister Raila Odinga's wife, Ida, has rejected a similar offer with a thank-you note to the head of civil service and secretary to the Cabinet, Mr Francis Muthaura, who notified her and the VP's wife of the payment.

Parliamentary Accounts Committee chairman Bonny Khalwale on Wednesday said the VP's wife should emulate Mrs Odinga. He said it was illegal for her to get the cash yet she was a Government employee.

Senior officer

Mrs Musyoka is a senior officer at the Central Bank of Kenya.

Dr Khalwale said it was not justified for the PM's and the VP's wives to receive the payments before their roles were formalised by the Public Service Commission.

In 2003, the office of the First Lady was established and Mrs Lucy Kibaki allocated Sh300,000 a month which has since been raised to Sh500,000.
