Liberia: Denmark's Generosity - Going Beyond the Headlines

Monrovia — A few days ago, something very significant happened in Liberia's drive to rid the country of its huge debt burden. A delegation from the Kingdom of Denmark headed by that country's Minister for Development Cooperation, Madam Ulla Tornaes arrived in Liberia to among other things, get a first hand impression of the progress taking place in the country. But more importantly, the Danish government made good on its promise to cancel the bilateral debt Liberia owes that European country, which amounts to a little over $32-million United States Dollars ($32,391,707.03). The amount, with accrued interests, represents loans acquired by the Government of Liberia in 1983. Additionally, Denmark also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Liberia to support the Government of Liberia and the United Nations Joint Program on Food and Nutrition, a gesture, which indeed represents yet, another significant boost by Denmark towards government's efforts to tackle the food crisis.

The debt cancellation by Denmark is in addition to further $22-million United States Dollars this Scandinavian country is committing to enhance women and children empowerment programs in Liberia, under Goal-3 of the Millennium Development Goals. Liberia has been chosen by Denmark as a model country towards efforts to achieve the Millennium Development Goal 3. Denmark's generosity will go a long way in helping Liberia make progress in the global campaign to enhance women's empowerment by the year 2015.
