Kyambogo Warriors established a three-point gap atop the MTN-Fuba League topflight table following a 77-60 convincing victory over former champions Nkumba University at Lugogo Indoor Stadium, Tuesday night.
Warriors had the best possible start, dominating the first quarter 26-10, a performance that prompted most Marines fans to walkout even before the second session got underway.
It was clear Marines were destined to a fifth loss in 10 outings and their second half rally (22-19, 19-18) made little impact after Warriors had won the first one 40-21. Nelson Wafula had a game high 25 points for Warriors, Steven Okias added 13 and Ronnie Kasewu 11.
Boniface Okello led Marines with 12 and Carrol Bisereko added 10. UCU Canons edged defending champions Mogas Falcons 87-75 but their female counterparts succumbed to a bitter 51-50 loss at the hands title holders A-1 Challenge in the other bruising clashes. Warriors now lead the standings with 19 points from 10 games followed by Falcons and Canons on 16.
The latter two teams are back in action at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole this evening. Canons engage KCC Lions while Falcons face another daunting task against Kampala International University (KIU).
In the other men's game, man of the match Ivan Enabu recorded a three-point play as Canons defeated Falcons 14-7 in overtime. Regulation time had ended 68-all but Ronnie Kalule got trapped twice, losing possession and matters were not helped by Henry Malinga's ejection in third quarter.
Women champions A-1 Challenge were lucky to make it 11 wins out 11 and return to action on Saturday against Victoria Lakers.
