Kampala — THE Bakonzo cultural leader, Charles Wesley Mumbere, has blasted the South Rwenzori Anglican Diocese leadership for not inviting him to their anniversary celebrations.
The diocese marked its 24th anniversary on Sunday with the occupation of the partially complete multi-billion cathedral.
"Though the arrangements started two months ago, my office was not informed. I learnt of the function through a radio talk-show last night," Mumbere complained.
He stressed that one of the objectives of the bitter 20-year Rwenzururu freedom struggle, initiated by his late father, Isaya Mukirania, was to establish an independent diocese for the Bakonzo from that in the Toro kingdom.
The diocese was founded in 1984 with retired Bishop Zebedee Masereka as its first Mukonzo prelate.
"We apologise for the error, Your Majesty. On behalf of the organising committee, I take your observations very seriously," said Bishop Jackson Nzerebende, amidst dead silence from the congregation.
The bishop said the diocese would start building a university at Kagando in August next year.
The chief celebrant, the Rev. Turner Valerie, from the Diocese of Gloftorn, UK, urged Christians to uphold honesty, generosity and humility.
"In the UK, we have achieved much but are still haunted by moral destruction manifested in sexual immorality and corruption in the church," she said.
