Ibadan — Oyo State House of Assembly on Tuesday in Ibadan approved a sum of 8 million as the state contribution towards boosting power generation in Nigeria .

A resolution to this effect was passed on the floor of the House during an emergency sitting where members discussed a letter from the Executive over the matter.

The letter forwarded to the House at the instance of the Special Intervention fund requesting for money from the 36 states of the federation to improve the megawatts used in the country.

On the letter, the Speaker of the House, Hon. Maroof Olawale Atilola said it was a good development by the federal government for the improvement of the power sector in the country.

According to him, "Nigeria as a developing country should have gone past this problem of power outage as nations such as Malaysia and China generate power from each zones,"

Atilola said that the decision by the federal government would strengthen the nation's industrial base, pointing out that it was high time that power generation was decentralized in the country.

It is expected that the money which would be deducted directly from the excess crude oil account at source by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) will be expended by the federal government for the upgrading of the power sector.

Other lawmakers in the Assembly who contributed to debates on the matter advised that the money being given out, should be used judiciously for it purpose for which it is meant to put an end to the problem of epileptic power supply in the country.
