Somalia: Nonstop Rains Affect IDPs Shelters in Mogadishu

Mogadishu — Thousands of internally displaced persons (IDPs) camping in and around Mogadishu have been effected by heavy rains pounded the Somali capital and surrounding areas more than day and night.

"We had non-stop rains from last night till now," said Nuuro Gheddi a mother of five in one of the camps in Arbiska, around 20km south of Mogadishu. "Many of the temporary shelters have been washed away. Now there are people without any shelter or sheltering with other families."

Salado Mohamed, a 40 year-old mother of four whose family shelter was destroyed, had to move in with relatives. She told Shabelle that she had very little food and had lost what few possessions she had.

"We have nothing," she explained. "Our clothes and bedding are all gone."

Other IDP mother Amino Muqtar says "We were already desperate and the rains have made our situation worse. We need all the help we can get now."

The rains, Muqtar said, had exacerbated the plight of the IDPs, many of whom had been doing odd jobs such as collecting firewood to supplement whatever they got from aid agencies although the aid food they used to receive from the aid organizations have been stopped for security reasons later than several aid workers have been killed by unknown groups.

Elsewhere some other Somali region are in rainy condition today with heavy rains continuing to pound in Lower Jubba, middle Shabelle and Hiran regions.

Calls for increased assistance for Somalia's IDPs have been growing since the food crisis took hold this year. But the calls seem to have fallen on deaf ears since the aid workers became target for unknown groups in the country.
