Namibia: Jehovah's Witnesses to Hold Convention

4 September 2008

Windhoek — Jehovah's Witnesses in Namibia join their counterparts worldwide this weekend in holding the 2008 Annual District Convention.

Hundreds are expected at the convention that starts tomorrow and ends on Sunday. The venue for the convention is the Independence Stadium.

The events marking the three-day programme will be guided by the theme "Guided by God's Spirit".

A media release on the convention said the opening part of the programme on Friday would deal with the subject "Why be Guided by God's Spirit," with a speaker explaining the role of the Holy Spirit in the outworking of Jehovah God's purpose for mankind. Later in the afternoon, the programme will focus on information helpful to young people.

"Witnesses believe that young people will be safeguarded if they live in accordance with guidance of God's Holy Spirit," it said, adding that they also believe that God's direction for young people can help them avoid many moral and spiritual pitfalls encountered in youthful years.

The session will conclude with a convention highlight entitled "Young People-safeguard your relationship with Jehovah". This aims at empowering the youths with information on how they can successfully follow the leading of the God's Holy Spirit in schools, at work, in the family, in the congregation and during social activities.

The Saturday programme will highlight how individuals whether young or old can be empowered by the Holy Spirit to resist temptation, cope with discouragement, withstand harmful peer pressure and also endure adversity.

The day will also focus on the Bible to emphasise how the Bible writers were inspired by God to record its content.

"The beneficial impact of the Bible counsel and message on the lives of millions of people will be examined, particularly in scenes and interviews throughout the convention," the statement said.

On Saturday residents that studied the Bible will undergo baptism, symbolising their dedication to God.

A full costume drama set in the early days of Christianity will again feature on the Sunday afternoon programme, with the concluding talk outlining how true Christians loyally serve with God's spirit direction today.

Jehovah's Witnesses number about seven million worldwide. They are organised in 101000 congregations which operate under the direction of a governing body in Brooklyn, New York.

Namibia has about 1500 Jehovah's Witnesses. Its official journal is called Watchtower, which has a circulation of 37 million copies in 167 different languages.
