Ghana: Plant Pool Rejuvenated

Stephen Odoi-Larbi

4 September 2008

The defunct Plant Pool Limited, which was in operation sometime ago to provide leasing, hiring and rental of earth moving equipment and other heavy duty trucks, has been revived with a new name, J. A. Plant Pool Company Limited.

J. A. Plant Pool is a private entity and is a sister company of waste management experts, Zoomlion Ghana Limited. Its core functions are the same as the defunct Plant Pool Limited and was established and registered as a new company in 2007, with offices in all the ten regions of the country. It became fully operational in March, this year, and has since kept growing from strength to strength, with equipment population of 46 heavy duty trucks and other earth moving machines, to address the needs of its clientele.

The revived company is a representative of equipment manufacturers such as Yutong, Howo, Dongfeng, HBXG, Hubei, Leyland and Mahindra.

The new J. A. Plant Pool was commissioned in Accra on Tuesday, at Dzorwulu, by the Deputy Minister of Transportation, Magnus Opare Asamoah, who represented Dr. R.W. Anane, Minister of Transportation.

Addressing the gathering, the Deputy Minister of Transportation, Magnus Opare Asamoah noted that since 2001, most of the roads under-construction has not been able to meet the deadline for completion, because of lack of adequate and reliable plants and equipments.

He said the re-birth of Plant Pool (now J.A. Plant Pool), was therefore, a welcomed initiative to relieve local contractors from the burden of not executing contracts on time.

"It is on record that since 2001, numerous road development and maintenance projects have been awarded nationwide to contractors, including our local contractors, but the execution and delivery of these projects have delayed. This is as a result of lack of adequate, appropriate and reliable road plant and equipment, particularly on the part of our local contractors. It is important that this new arrangement should be sustained to enable our contractors to execute government projects efficiently", he noted.

The General Manager of J.A.Plant Pool, Reverend Emmanuel Amofa said the re-birth of Plant Pool was as a result of his outfit's commitment in doing business with Ghanaians.

According to him, his outfit is devoted to enhancing capacity of young mechanical engineering graduates from the various tertiary institutions free of charge, by setting up a training school to that effect.

"Our objective is to create a large pool of mechanical engineers who would be readily available to undertake after-sales services wherever our products will be in the country", he explained.

He appealed to government to develop a framework to guide the country's heavy equipment industry to attain greater heights. Among the dignitaries present were Ms. Joyce Aryee, Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Chamber of Mines, Bishop Agyin Asare and Paapa Owusu Ankomah, Minister of Trade and Industry.
