5 September 2008

Edo State government yesterday dismissed reports that the Special Adviser to the governor on protocol, Mr. Brodricks Itua was arrested in the United States by that country's security agents for money laundering.

At a press conference in Benin yesterday addressed by the Commissioner overseeing the Ministry of Information and Orientation, Mr. Anthony Iyalekhue with Mr. Itua in attendance, the commissioner described the report as unfair, saying that none of the governor's aide was arrested during the governor's recent visit to the United States to attend the Edo State People's Convention, in Boston .

He explained that the governor was in Boston to explain to Edo State indigenes the giant strike his administration has made since it came into office last year.

His words, "to say that one of the governor's aides was arrested in such a noble journey was to throw a damper to a very successful journey".

He said that the Edo State government owed it a duty to the Edo people to clear, "this malicious and political story coming from our political opponents".

Mr. Iyalekhue advised journalists to always cross checked their information and carry out proper investigation before rushing to the press just as he called on them not to allow desperate politicians to hoodwinked them.

In his defense, Mr. Ituah who passed his passport round for journalists to ascertain whether it was stamped for any offence, explained that he left Nigeria August 28th and arrive Boston August 29th and participated in all activities at the convention, and "nobody arrested or questioned me".
