5 September 2008

APPARENTLY worried by dearth of fresh hands to steer the practice of surveying profession to a greater height, the Federal Government has been asked to fund and equip tertiary institutions offering surveying and geo-informatics courses in the country to enable them to execute their training functions more effectively.

This plea was contained in a communiqué signed by the Surveyor-General of the Federation, Surv. Austin Njpuome at the end of the 2008 Survey Co-ordination and Advisory Board on Surveying Training conference held in Birnin Kebbi the Kebbi State capital.

The communiqué, amongst other things, challenged the government to encourage and empower the teaching staff in the profession to stem brain drain and frustration through the improvement of their condition of service.

It added, "Government at all levels should encourage students intake into Surveying and Geo-informants programmes in tertiary institutions through the introduction of such incentives as special scholarship and bursary awards."

According to the communiqué, "government should encourage and facilitate a multi-disciplinary approach to the planning and implementation of he 7-Point Agenda by initiating meetings and discussion session through its relevant ministries and extra ministerial departments".

"The Agenda is all-embracing and far-reaching. Government needs to set up a multi-disciplinary committee for action plans/implementation strategies; Surveyors as map/chart makers, and geo-spatial data providers should brace up to the challenges of the agenda."

It also noted, "Geo-spatial data, maps, chats and map substitutes such as imageries, aerial photographs, orthophoto-maps etc showing what is where need to be acquired by the survey offices throughout the country to facilitate the execution of this Agenda".

"State governments should modernize and equip their survey offices and upgrade them to extra-ministerial status in order to adequately empower and position them for the success implementation and monitoring of the Agenda."
