Cameroon: Congestion in most Travelling Agencies

Henriette Onguene

3 September 2008

At the eve of the start of classes, most people are finding it difficult to travel.

Long queues, passengers sitting on their suitcases, buses coming and others going. That is the prevailing atmosphere in most travelling agencies barely a few days to the start of the school year.

Alain Wanji, is a passenger in one of these agencies. "It is purely coincidental. I did not wait for the eve of the academic year . I just planned to travel today", he said. Miss Essono, another passenger, said that she has a lot of difficulties travelling because of the crowd. "There are many persons; everybody wants to go because of school. I knew that it will be like that. I even planned to travel three weeks ago, but it is due to financial constraints that I am forced to travel at this time", she said. Miss Essono added that she has been waiting for more than one hour. She was registered for the fifteenth bus, but at the time we were discussing, the eleventh bus was moving off.

On their part, Managers of agencies assure that everything is put in place to decongest the passengers and allow everybody to travel safely. Eric Moungui, Manager of Centrale Voyages Yaounde said that the General Manager bought new buses. He and his colleagues insure that the rule "one passenger, one seat" is respected. They organise meetings with drivers to sensitize them on road dangers. In addition to these measures, they have bought new tyres.

Same thing at Buca Voyages Yaounde where Nicolas Oyono, Manager, added that the alcohol test is compulsory for every driver and in case a driver is tired, he has to indicate to the Management who will take the necessary measures. "We have ten drivers and many buses in reserve in case of any emergency. Every bus goes through technical controls. We endeavour to prevent accidents on a day-to-day basis, not because classes will soon start", he said.

Passengers are therefore advised to be patient at this time of the year, because he who goes slowly, goes surely. A word to the wise is enough.
