Uganda: Kampala City Council Halts Crackdown On Butcheries

Kampala — Kampala City Council has halted it's crackdown on substandard butcheries because of security concerns. The District Veterinary Officer, Dr Bariyanga Ahimbisibwe, said KCC has resolved to involve Police force before resuming the operation. He said council officials have already communicated to the Regional Police Commander, Mr Edward Ochom, over the security issue.

"We are in touch with the police to join us in this operation. We want to use the police as a back up after some victims proved to be violent against our staff at Kamwokya," Mr Ahimbisibwe said during an interview in Kampala yesterday.

He added, "we are resuming the operation soon unless otherwise advised by the town clerk". The temporarily call off of the crackdown on butcheries that operate below minimum standards follows a nasty incident on Wednesday in which some KCC law enforcement officers were beaten up by errant butcheries operators in Kamwokya, a city suburb.

The law enforcers were part of an inspection team, which was conducting a health operation in all city butcheries. KCC was yesterday expected to extend the operation to Kabalagala in Makindye Division.
