Dutse — A Coalition of women NGOs in Jigawa state under the aegis of Jigawa Women Network for Access to Justice (JUNNAJ), have condemned the outright denial of land to women by the society.

The chairperson of JUNNAJ, Hajiya Uwani Yunusa, said over the time, women have been denied the right to possess land either by their male relatives or even the larger society.

"Even if a women's father dies, other members of the family ensured that she is not given a share of the land left by the deceased under the pretext that she is a woman and what would she do with land? she commented.

She added that the trend was unfortunate, saying women should be allowed to possess land whenever they desire so, because according to her, they also have equal rights.

The chairperson said they would soon embark on advocacy and sensitization with a view to create awareness among women over their right to possess land.

In his remarks the chairman Jigawa State Justice Sector Reform Commission, Honourable Tijjani Abubakar (OFR), said Islam is the first religion that recognises the rights of women and children, the two most valuable groups. He said the Coalition should try to get these rights in the most acceptable way.
