LATE President Mwanawasa's crusade against corruption was not driven by malice but the desire to improve people's lives, a pre-recorded farewell statement to the nation has revealed.
In the statement recorded on March 23, 2005, which was broadcast on Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC) radio and television last night, Dr Mwanawasa said it was unfortunate that he lost close friends because of the fight against corruption.
"I was driven purely by my love for the country and there was no malice. I was always grieved to see so much poverty among our future leaders," Dr Mwanawasa said.
Dr Mwanawasa apologised to all those that he may have hurt in his quest to rid the country of corruption but hoped that the MMD would continue with the crusade that he started.
"I hope that this fight will continue," the late president said.
He said he strongly believed that development would only take place with good governance and respect for the rule of law and that prompted him to embark on the anti-graft crusade.
He thanked the people of Zambia for having accorded him a chance to rule the country as president and said he put in his best to improve the country's agriculture sector and attract foreign investment into the nation.
In the statement under clause 28 of his will, the president also thanked all those who attended his funeral.
