Nigeria: FG Tackles Industrial Pollution

5 September 2008

Lagos — Director of Pollution Control in the Federal Ministry of Environment, Dr. Ogundayo Dada, has said that the Federal Government is addressing industrial pollution in the country.

Dada told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday in Abuja that the problems of pollution could be tackled if industries changed the technologies they used in waste discharge. He said that studies in industrial effluent treatment facilities had been concluded in four major cities in the country, namely Aba, Lagos, Kaduna and Kano.

Dada said that the studies aimed at determining the impact of industrial effluent on soils, surface and ground water, which serve as majorsources of water supply to the populace.

He said that the outcome of the studies would be submitted to the investors and stakeholders for deliberation. The director said that government would analyse various treatment options and at the end, adopt the most feasible technology available.

"Some investors have already indicated interest in the project and are willing to buy into the programme under the federal government public- private partnership arrangement," he said.

Dada said that a stakeholders forum would be organised to fashion out implementation strategy for the treatment of industrial effluent and provide a blue print for industrial pollution control in major industrial cities.
