Poultry chain Rainbow Farms is taking a Khayelitsha man to the Cape High Court, claiming the man's chicken farm is a health hazard and may spread disease to its farm 500m away.
The court has temporarily interdicted the man, Mangxola Noel Mzwamadoda, from continuing his chicken farming activities until the case returns to court on September 9.
In court papers, Rainbow Farms rearing manager Johan Verwey said its breeder-rearing farm in the Hopefield area was a significant link in the company's production chain.
He said the farm had 19 chicken houses, each housing between 8 000 and 10 000 breeders.
He said procedures were in place to prevent the outbreak or spread of disease. It was also important, he said, to ensure sufficient distance between poultry farms - not less than a 10km radius - to reduce the risk of disease being spread.
Verwey said Mzwamadoda's farm had no biosecurity measures or access control.
He said Mzwamadoda had contravened the National Environmental Management Act and claimed his activities were unlawful.
