Yaounde — Federal Government yesterday depended its decision to hand over Bakassi to Cameroun saying its the best thing to happen to Africa.

Minister of Health Dr. Hassan Lawal, speaking in Cameroun described the event of August14 as a proof that the African continent has come of age and can resolve its disputes peacefully without resorting to war.

He called on other nations of the world to emulate such conduct in dispute resolution.

Lawal who spoke in Yaoundé while on a courtesy visit to the Prime Minister of Cameroun, Chief Inoni Ephraimsaid the peaceful hand over of Bakassi was a disappointment only to those who do not wish Africa well and who would have loved to see both countries go to war over what could be resolved peacefully.

He said such countries who were expecting the worst had long believed that Africans could neither live in peace and harmony nor resolve their differences without resorting to bloody wars. He expressed the hope that the handover of the territory although painful to Nigeria would open a new vista in the bilateral relations and the unity of both countries.

The Prime Minister said the event was a clear demonstration that Africans could solve their problem amicably, but expressed surprise that the landmark event did not get appreciable publicity in western media. He called on both countries to see the events as medium in which to harness each others resources and collaborate in order to build bridges.
