Bauch — OVER 70 per cent of the academic staff of the Federal Polytechnic Bauchi have so far been trained on effective and modern techniques of teaching using Information Communication Technology (ICT). This is coming as two research projects from the school have won World Bank grants valued at $500,000.00 under the Federal Ministry of Education Step 'B' Project.

Acting Rector of the polytechnic, Emmanuel Ndububa disclosed this at a workshop on the new curriculum for teachers of the institution under the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) scheme for tertiary institutions held at the school.

The research that won the grants he said were in post harvest technology and ICT certification and perfection, pointing out that the projects are expected to commence by the end of this month.

He explained that the 2008 MDG project is centered on "curriculum training for teachers" for which he said about 90 senior academic staff would be trained on the new National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) Technical Vocational Education (TVE) curriculum.

Mr. Ndububa said the new revised NBTE/TVET curriculum besides upgrading of instructional resources included the incorporation of programmes on relevant ICT modules and entrepreneurial education courses which have become mandatory requirements.

He, then urged NBTE to as a matter of urgency hasten the completion of the preparation for the teaching of the ICT and entrepreneurial education courses, noting that to effectively deliver the programme, polytechnics are required to set up entrepreneurship study centre to offer students variety of trades for practical experience.

The acting Rector also said the workshop was to prepare lecturers and instructors with the rudiments of the new curriculum for effective course delivery.

Earlier in his remarks, chairman of the occasion, Bala Jibril who is the State Commissioner for Higher Education commended the Federal Ministry of Education for organising the workshop which he said will be more beneficial to all the academic staff.

According to him, without ICT knowledge, no lecturer will be able to impart proper knowledge to his students.
