Nigeria: Aircraft Wreckage - AIB Yet to Recover Black Box

5 September 2008

Lagos — ACCIDENT and Investigation Bureau (AIB) yesterday said, it is yet to recover the Flight Data Recorder (FDR) and the Cock Pit Recorder (CPR) also known as the black box so as to know what happened to the ill-fated Beech craft 100D.

The aircraft, which had three cabin crew members including Captain Augustine Egbede, co-pilot Mohammed Tango and Miss Fubarata Jack, got missing last March 15 on its Way to the Bebi Airstrip Obudu Cross River State.

Wreckage of the aircraft was only found last Monday, in Obalinku, Cross River State.

According to the AIB spokesperson Mr. Tunji Oketunbi, the investigators were still searching for the black box, which he said, would aid their investigations.

Oketunbi said a team of investigators headed by Director of Engineering, Emmanuel Diala, alongside the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) are already at site searching for the missing parts of the aircraft.

He said that from today (Friday), two more teams of investigators would be added to reinforce the efforts in tracking the missing FDR and CPR.

He confirmed that the passport of the pilot had been found even as pathologists from the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) are working on the decomposed bodies to properly identify the victims.

He, however said that AIB has not been able to ascertain how many people have been found.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), in a bid to ensure safety has directed all pilots flying the airspace to adhere to the minimal weather specification for all the airports.

The warning came on the heels of thunderstorm, severe turbulence, microburst and wind shear events coupled with poor visibility and contaminated runways in recent time in the country.
