Windhoek — The College of the Arts is delighted to announce its Music Festival 2008, which takes place on September 12 and 13 at 20h00 in the National Theatre.
Thanks to generous sponsorship from both Bank Windhoek and the Franco Namibian Cultural Centre, we are able to showcase our most talented students who will perform as soloists with the Windhoek Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Henry Grossmann.
Nineteen students have been chosen to participate as soloists. They are Caroline Walters, Ané Hoepfner, Anja and Imke Redecker (recorder), Elfrida Chipeio, Johné Titus, Lilani Kisting, Miriam George, Michael Lubinda and Ponti Dikuua (voice), Charlotte Meaden-Torbitt and Anuschka Maier (flute), Anine Peters (violin), Leonora Bernstein, Menanto Chamberlain, Natalia Nashenda, Linekela/Goâgoses, Heinrich Laue and François Becker (piano). In addition, the College of the Arts Youth Choir will perform Ode to Joy from Symphony no. 9 by Beethoven.
The programme for the two evenings includes works by Vivaldi, Telemann, Haydn, Handel, Mozart, Heinichen, Poulenc, Ten Have, Kabalevsky, Rowley, Rutter and Andrew Lloyd Webber.
The concerts will be directed by the German conductor Henry Grossmann.
Who first achieved international success as guest conductor of the State Philharmonic orchestra in Arad, Romania from 1991 to 1998. Grossmann has had regular contact with Namibia since 1999, appearing as instructor at the annual Music Week in Swakopmund.
After four years as head of the music school in his hometown of Süssen, he moved to Metzingen in 1996 to become the director of the music school there where he also teaches conducting. He is currently planning collaboration with young Chinese pianist, Maik Guo, together with the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra.
The annual music festival provides a showcase of the very best students from the College of the Arts. Its aim is to promote local talent while maintaining international standards of excellence. It encourages students to strive to perform with a symphony orchestra, a platform, which very few would otherwise achieve.
The College of the Arts is deeply indebted to Bank Windhoek and the Franco Namibian Cultural Centre, main sponsors of this event, as well as our other sponsors, the German Embassy and the Ministry of Youth, National Service, Sport and Culture.
