His Excellency, President John Kofi Agyekum Kufuor of Ghana will declare the first African Grassroots Capacity Building Seminar open on September 15th 2008 at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel, Accra, Ghana.
The first-of-its-kind initiative, which is a product of a strategic partnership between Friends of the Global Fund Africa (Friends Africa) and the African Council of AIDS Service Organisations (AfriCASO), will increase the planning, implementation, evaluation and fund-raising capacity of 60 health-focused grassroots organisations from 26 African countries.
This pioneering seminar is being spearheaded by Friends Africa and keenly supported by the UN Special Envoy on AIDS to Africa and Vice-Chair of the Geneva-based Global Fund for AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, Elizabeth Mataka. Other donors and partners participating include UNAIDS, World Health Organization (WHO), World Bank, German Agency for Technical Co-operation (GTZ), Rollback Malaria Partnership, Global AIDS Alliance and the Packard and MTN Foundations amongst others.
The outcome of this special initiative is for participating organisations to scale up their activities through increased funding that will only come with competitive proposals and satisfactory implementation of existing projects.
According to the CEO and Founder of Friends Africa, Dr. Akudo Anyanwu Ikemba, "the response to our call for NGO nominations was remarkable and far-reaching with close to four hundred eligible submissions received from 32 African nations. The seminar will build capacity to raise funds and implement programs amongst these organisations that have roots on the ground and actually reach the people".
A six-month support period will follow the seminar to track participants' progress towards desired outcomes.
The project is funded by Access Bank Plc, Afrinvest West Africa and the United Nations Foundation.
