Monrovia — President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf and former Ireland President now President for Realizing Rights (RR), Ms. Mary Robinson, including the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights are expected to address a high level forum Monday on promoting decent work in Africa.
Deputy Labor Minister Jackson Wonde said the forum would be the first of its kind to be held in the sub-region.
He said the right to good working conditions and sufficient income to sustain a decent life in Africa would be at the heat of the debates among participants of the forum from several countries.
The Deputy Labor Ministry boss spoke Thursday at a news conference held at the headquarters of the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) in Sinkor, Monrovia.
He said discussions at the forum would focus on a wide range of issues affecting nations across the region, including the challenges of promoting decent approaches and practical examples of post-conflict reconstruction and job creation.
He said participants would also look at policies to promote employment and economic growth, gender dimensions of employment, job, intensive investment approaches for reconstruction and recovery, and social protection as well as social dialogue.
According to him, the forum which is expected to last for two days would serve primarily as a platform where participants would review and share policies and programs for realizing decent work at the national level.
He quoted Ms. Robinson as saying that the forum would encourage concrete plans by the different stakeholders for taking forward the decent work agenda in Liberia and elsewhere in Africa.
Mr. Wonde told reporters that one of the main outcomes that would be expected from the forum is a decent work programme for Liberia.
