Akosombo — The National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential running mate, Mr. John Dramani Mahama, has cautioned Ghanaians, especially politicians, to embark on free and fair campaigns, devoid of insults and personal attacks.
According to Mr. John Dramani Mahama, politicians should champion the cause of preaching peace and unity, which would create the basis to sustain the peaceful environment Ghanaians were currently enjoying, rather than drumming and chanting war songs.
He noted that politics or elections should not be war, but rather an opportunity for people to exercise their franchise, and express their views on matters relating to national development.
To this end, he called on the leaders and supporters of the two main parties - New Patriotic Party (NPP) and National Democratic Congress (NDC) - to exercise political tolerance and be circumspect in utterances, comments and statements they make, before, during and after the December general elections.
Even though he called on Ghanaians to ensure peace during the polls, he implored supporters of the NDC to be vigilant, before and during the elections.
John Mahama was speaking at various mini rallies held at Frankadua and Akosombo, in the Asuogyaman District of the Eastern Region, last Tuesday.
The two mini rallies formed part of an-18 day tour, of 18 out of 28 constituencies in the Eastern Region by the running mate, to acquaint himself with and test the political fever within the area.
Mahama stated that the time had come for the people of Ghana to be set free from the slavery hands of the NPP, who have created hardships and unbearable living conditions in the country.
He, therefore, called on Ghanaians to vote back the NDC to power, since it was the only political party that could save the country from these untold hardships.
The Member of Parliament (MP) for Tamale South, Mr. Haruna Iddrisu, called on Ghanaians not to allow themselves to be deceived by the NPP, with their so-called National Youth Employment Programme (NYEP), National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) and School Feeding Programme (SFP).
Earlier, Mr. Mahama paid a courtesy call on the Chief of New Akrade, Nana Okru-Kata, and later the people of South Sanchi, Atimpoku, Frankadua and Akosombo.
He noted that his decision to call on them was to seek their guidance and blessings.
Nana Okru-Kata, who could not hide his admiration of the young handsome NDC running mate, launched his passionate appeal to the residents of the area, to vote massively for the NDC in the December elections, even though chiefs were not allowed to be involved in active politics.
According to him, Mahama, who is affectionately called by NDC supporters as the "Ghana Barack Obama," was not a stranger to the land of New Akrade, but a brother and father, who had contributed his quota to the development of the area.
He explained that Mahama was a God sent person to Ghanaians, to deliver his people from their daily plights, as God sent Jesus Christ to deliver mankind from their sins.
