Uganda: Men, Work Harder - First Lady

5 September 2008

Kampala — The wife of the President, Mrs. Janet Museveni, on Wednesday opened the Rwenzori Civil Society trade fair with a call on men to be responsible family heads.

The function at which the Rwenzori Women's Forum was also launched, took place at Kyabenda Senior Secondary School, Kahunge village in Kamwenge district.

Addressing huge crowds that turned up at the fair, Mrs. Museveni particularly castigated men who turn to drinking while their families starve.

According to a release from State House, she also called on women to fully participate in the planning of their families' expenditure and diversify enterprises in order to have maximum financial earnings.

Mrs. Museveni particularly singled out the Rwenzori Women's Forum and its affiliated organizations for their efforts in eradicating poverty and empowering women through education and sensitization on their rights.

She said that when the NRM government came to power in 1986, there was a big challenge to foster development in a country that had been torn by war and strife for over 20 years.

She added that government has carried out its part in fostering development by improving the services and infrastructure. She said that the fight against poverty can only be undertaken by the wananchi themselves.

She later inspected stalls where agricultural, medicinal, financial and environmental services and products were exhibited.
