Uganda: Otafiire Wants IGG's Report

Kampala — The Minister of Local Government, Maj. Gen. Kahinda Otafiire wants the Inspector General of Government (IGG) to release her findings on the Nakawa/Naguru housing estate evictions saga.

He said the IGG was sabotaging the redevelopment programme of the dilapidated housing estates, through her failure to release her findings.

"My quarrel with the IGG is that she should exercise her constitutional responsibility cautiously and responsibly," he said.

The evictions to give way for redevelopment of the two housing estates into a modern satellite city with residences and shopping centres, were stopped by the IGG after complaints that the contract process was flawed.

The developer, British Organisation Comer Homes Group and OPEC Prime Properties has issued a 45-day notice of intent to sue Uganda claiming £500m (over sh1.465 trillion) if the land is not availed to them in time.

According to Otafiire, the 45 days that the investor gave expire in the middle of this month. He insisted that the people claiming those houses were not legal tenants so they have no locus to claim anything.

Last month, the residents of the two estates asked the government to compensate them before they could vacate.
