Kampala — PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni on Thursday commissioned prepaid electricity in Kanungu as he concludes his four-day tour of the district.

The President has been in Kanungu on a prosperity for all programme campaign.

The prepaid electricity is the first of the kind in Uganda, the state minister for energy Simon D'Ujanga said. Users pay before they get power.

The project, which started in 2005 by the Ferdsurt engineering company, was complete early this year.

"The project, which has a stretch of 88km of high and 80km for low voltage, was connected from Rwerere in Nyakagyeme Rukungiri through Kambuga Kihihi to Butogota at the Congo boarder."

D'Ujanga said. Phase one of the project cost sh7.8b and the second phase will start soon and cover Rugyeyo sub county.

President Museveni donated four pickups to farmers Johnson Kazigaba of Kambuga, Stephen Butamanya of Mpungu, Annet Mwesiga of Kayonza and Eldard Behemwire of Rugyeyo.
