Nwankwo Kanu says he is ready to fight Peter Crouch and Jermain Defoe for a starting shirt at Portsmouth after being out for close to two months with injury.
While the Super Eagles prepare to take on South Africa's Bafana Bafana on Saturday's Nations Cup qualifier, Kanu has turned his attentions to his club football and more pertinently, winning back his place in Harry Redknapp's starting line-up.
The early season form of new signing Peter Crouch and January acquisition Jermain Defoe has suggested that the Champions League winner may struggle to dislodge the pair from Harry Redknapp's front-line.
Kanu featured in Pompey's reserve fixture against Fulham this week and is hopeful of disrupting the burgeoning partnership in his side's strike line.
He told Sky Sports: "I am on the comeback trail, I am feeling fine. I am not at 100 per cent yet, but scoring last Monday was fantastic and I am delighted to play.
"I love to be on the field and now I have to try and get in the team. The strikers did well last week at Everton, but I will let them know that the chief is back and ready to challenge them.
"There is a good spirit in the camp and we are ready to write more good things in the Pompey sports book."
