Kenya: Stars Can Go All the Way

7 September 2008

editorial

Nairobi — Kenyans have all reasons to celebrate Harambee Stars' victory over Namibia on Saturday.

It may have been a slim 1-0 win over a team Kenya has never beaten before, but the three points are of crucial importance in the race to the 2010 World Cup/Africa Cup of Nations.

The win keeps Kenya's dream of playing in the World Cup in South Africa, and in the Nations Cup in Angola alive.

But while we remain optimistic of even better results in future, there still remains a lot of work to be done before we can say Harambee Stars is ready to play the best in the world come South Africa 2010.

The media attention the match received, both locally and internationally, is a clear manifestation of the interest that has developed about the local game.

It has shown that the rest of the world is quite aware that Kenya has great potential in football. The challenge is now on the managers of football in Kenya to ensure that they do not take their eyes off the ultimate prize, which is a ticket to South Africa.

The Government must also come out openly and support the national team to ensure that Kenya's dream of playing in the World Cup is achieved.

The same applies to corporate institutions. We understand that the road ahead remains bumpy for the Stars, but as they have proved in this campaign, they can make it to the greatest soccer party in the world come 2010.

Just like every other Kenyan, we will continue to cheer our national team to success because we also share the dream that the Harambee Stars can shine beyond Kenyan borders.
