Uganda: NCS Calls Boxing Bodies for Crisis Meeting

Kampala — The committee appointed by National Council of Sports (NCS) to handle wrangles engulfing the local boxing body, has summoned renegade boxing clubs for a meeting at Lugogo on Tuesday in a bid to iron out the crisis.

"We want to know their problems. After that we shall come up with our position," Aligawesa said on Saturday.

The 18 clubs, under their umbrella body - the Uganda Amateur Boxing Clubs Association (UABCA) - accuse the Uganda Amateur Boxing Federation of allegedly altering the constitution.

The committee chaired by Willy Odwong will also meet the former normalisation committee members on the same day. Other members of the committee include Aligawesa, Peninah Kabenge, Julius Zziwa and Kigongo Bukenya.

UABCA, which is led by Godfrey Nyakana, is planning a junior championship at KCC's training ground at Lugogo starting Monday.

The week-long event is for boxers in the under-18 age category, according to UABCA secretary Jimmy Sekinoga.

But UABF has vowed to do all in their powers to stop the competition whose weigh-in is slated for today.

UABF general secretary David Kyambadde promised to halt the competition arguing that it was illegal.

"Those (UABCA) are very mischievous fellows. We shall take any appropriate measures to ensure it (the competition) doesn't take place," Kyambadde vowed.

But Nyakana insisted their weeklong junior championships would go ahead as planned.

"It is unfortunate they can plan to stop us but we shall go ahead with the championships because UABF don't have the mandate," Nyakana said.

NCS general secretary Aligawesa has also dismissed the tournament as illegal and Council would not accept it.

"As Council, we know only UABF as the supreme body that runs boxing," Aligawesa stated yesterday.

Asked whether NCS will come in to stop the tournament, Aligawesa said: "We have no right to stop it. That is the duty of UABF."
