Awka — GOVERNOR Peter Obi has charged traders at the popular Bridge Head Drug Market to support the State government's efforts to rid the market of fake and sub-standard drugs, warning that his administration would deal decisively with anybody threatening the existence of the market.
Addressing the traders at the weekend, Obi made it clear that the state government would work closely with NAFDAC and other Federal agencies to properly sanitize the market, saying that he would not hesitate to arrest and prosecute anybody who compromised standard.
He recounted that with the help of other South-East governors, he was able to stop the permanent closure of the market following negative reports by World Health Organisation (WHO) and other national regulatory bodies.
He said that government would not allow the actions of few self- seeking individuals to threaten the market and survival of many families who rely on the market for livelihood, reminding the traders that the closure of the market would increase unemployment problem and difficulties in Igboland.
He promised the traders that government would sink a water bore-hole in the market before the end of next month and enjoined them to ensure prompt payment of taxes and levies to support government to sustain implementation of programmes for sustainable development.
