Nigeria: CRHA to Study Impact of Industries on Environment

The Cross River State House of Assembly has resolved to carry out an indepth study of the impact of the activities of industries on the environment.

The resolution was made Thursday in Calabar, following a motion by the member representing Ikom 1 Constituency, Mr Agbiji Agbiji, calling for an indepth study of the effects of production and haulage activities of companies operating in the state.

Agbiji who listed the companies as UNICEM, Dangote Transport and Dangote Flour Mills Ltd, noted that they have the capacity to release harmful substances on the environment.

According to the lawmaker, "the effects of production and haulage activities is enormous as it affects the state of infrastructure."

"The major cause of accidents on our roads is as a result of heavy trucks, especially as these roads were not constructed to carry such loads," he lamented.

The Assembly, however, constituted a special committee headed by Agbiji to carry out a study of the impact of activities of these companies of their immediate environment and adjourning communities.

Also Thursday, the member representing Boki II Constituency, Mr Jacob Enyia, on called on the state government to improve on the incessant power outage in Ekorinim and Satellite Town areas of the state capital.

Enyia who made the call while moving a motion for adjournment, decried the poor supply of power to the area, adding that the issue has been persistent since the inauguration of the estates.

He urged the state government to alleviate the hardship of the residents of the area by making its presence felt in these areas.
