Governor Liyel Imoke of Cross River State has given contractors handling the new Bakassi Housing Project a two-week ultimatum to complete outstanding civil works or have their contracts terminated.
Speaking after an on-the- spot assessment of work to ascertain the level of commitment by contractors at New Obutong, Imoke said contractors who were yet to complete their work have no excuse for their slow pace.
According to Imoke while fielding questions from news men, all the contractors have been given a two-week ultimatum to complete all the 200 housing units, after two weeks any contractor that fails to complete his building will have his contract terminated and his company blacklisted.
Imoke, who specifically stressed that the extent of the two weeks terminating on September 16, said if government realised on September 17, that no building was completed and handed over to government, that contract will be terminated, adding that there is no basis for one contractor to do well while another is not doing well.
He explained that it is the same contract, same term, same funding and the same condition and there is no excuse for non-performance as funding have been provided by Federal Government with assistance from the state, saying that the state wanted to make sure those who opted to remain in the state will be properly accommodated which will commence as soon as government completed the decongesting of the temporary resettlement camp
Investigation reveals that over 182 buildings have been roofed, 40 ready though with minor set backs, 14 ready to be handed over, 22 unroofed while erection of poles and stringing of cables for electricity have commenced as the construction of internal road network has reached advanced stage.
The Governor was accompanied by his Deputy, Mr. Efiok Cobham, the Secretary to the State Government and the alternate chairman, Bakassi Resettlement Programme, Mr. Fidelis Ugbo and the Secretary, State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA).
