Lagos — As journalists in Gombe mourn the death of the Sales representative of The Nation Newspapers Baba Olu who died in a fatal motor accident early this week, Governor Mohammed Danjuma Goje has offset the medical bills of the seven survivors which include Daily Champion's Nkwachukwu Ndunaga.
The accident which occurred on Monday morning around 11am, along Gombe/Bauchi road about 26 kilometres from Gombe town saw the survivors sustaining various degrees of injuries while they were returning to Bauchi with unsold copies of various newspapers.
Daily Champion gathered that the accident occurred when a Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) staff driving a Honda Hanesi saloon car ran off his lane to hit the New Nigeria Newspaper (NNN) pick-up car which conveyed the sales representatives and their unsold copies of newspapers where Baba Olu of The Nation Newspaper died instantly.
It was also gathered that the CBN staff had confessed to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) officers that he was driving with a lot of tiredness in him which probably resulted in him dosing off when the accident occurred.
The survivors reported that all efforts by Mallam Idris, the NNN driver to avoid the accident could not be possible due to the high speed of the CBN staff. The NNN driver sustained various injuries and fractures and is still receiving treatment at the hospital as at the time of filing this report.
The Gombe state Governor, Alhaji Mohammed Danjuma Goje who heard of the accident came to the Federal Medical Centre Gombe later in the day where the survivors were receiving treatment.
While condoling the relatives of the bereaved, the governor prayed God to avoid such disasters just as he called on drivers to drive with care. He also called on the management of the FMC Gombe to include all the medical expenses of the seven survivors in the account of the state government.
