Uganda Now Hit by an Influx of Cults

analysis

They don't believe in the Bible, Jesus or even in the story of Adam and Eve - which they consider a myth just like the story of Kintu and Nambi. Their days of worship are on the 2nd, 12th and 22nd of every month. That is not all; names like Adyeri, Ateenyi, and Kagingo are considered satanic. Described by its followers as a religion made for Africans and its founder a "Pan Africanist in philosophy", they are the "Faith of Unity and Oneness", led by a 78-year-old former school teacher - Mr Dosteo Bisaka.

Bisaka's preaches "scriptures" picked from his self-written "Bible".

In 1988, Mr Lule, a staunch Catholic, was facing a huge problem - his wife, a tailor by profession, was, according to him, being "bewitched". Lule claims every time his wife went to work, she would complain of headaches, nausea and would all of a sudden dose off while tailoring. Convinced that there was something "uniquely wrong" with his wife, Lule searched for a cure from hospitals, his church, and even visited witch doctors.

However, his wife just got worse, until he bumped into a friend who told him of a man in Bunyoro called Bisaka who had healing powers and could cure his wife - for free. According to Lule, Bisaka cured his wife. And from that day, Lule quit Catholicism to join the faith of Mr Bisaka.

Bisaka was born on June 11, 1930 at Kitoma Kiboizi, in the parish of Bujuni in Bunyoro District. He grew up with his grandparents, who were staunch Catholics. His grandfather was a Catholic Catechist, so were his grandmother and his father Petero Byombi, who was a Catechist for 58 years. And it is with this Catholic background that Bisaka joined the Catholic Church, where he became an acclaimed hymn composer and church choir master.

But it was in 1975, after he had composed the hymn Nkaikiriza Ruhanga omurungi that he started experiencing "special powers" in his arms; powers that led him to heal someone by touching him on the February 22 1980. That is the day he quit Catholicism to form his own movement - the Faith of Unity and Oneness.

Quitting Catholicism meant quitting everything to do with Christianity, starting with the Bible. According to Bisaka, the Bible teaches division. "The Bible teaches division, that is why you find that many religions emanate from within it. Also, it bears no signature because those who wrote it were aware that they were not right.

The ardent and loyal followers of Bisaka, who must wear white robes to church.

If there are 10,000 religions, and each religion contains tens of thousands of people, is the whole world not pervaded by being taught violation of God's commandment of loving one another? And if these religious sects call one another false, which of them is the true one, or is it the Bible which contains false words?" he wonders.

So, if the Bible is false and written by liars, would that mean that the core foundations of Christianity such as baptism and Jesus being the son of God are all fallacies? According to Bisaka, they are all lies. "Jesus never existed, he was no saviour. The sin he came to remove, that was alleged to have been committed by Adam, was never there!

This is because Adam himself never existed: it was a myth, just like that of Kintu and Nambi here in Uganda." When asked whether he supports the uniting of people in matrimony, he asks: "To those who believe in the religion of Jesus, how many people did Jesus unite in matrimony?" Bisaka is married to three wives.

According to one Kaboyo, who has been a follower of Bisaka for the last ten years, the differences between his faith and Christianity are fundamental. "For starters, it's not a religion but a movement founded by an African, unlike Christianity which was imported into Africa by the white man.

The Bible is divisive; that is why we discarded it and formed Oneness, uniting all people irrespective of race, into one flock under one shepherd - Bisaka." He adds that Runyoro is the chief language in the Faith of Unity because it was formed in Bunyoro, but quickly adds that other languages are used according to where their branches are situated. "We have branches in Nansana, Kamwokya, Bweyogerere and Sironko, but they use other languages like Luganda and English, though the hymns are in Runyoro."

Their church has institutional structures, although the difference is in the titles. According to Kaboyo, the word "church" is not used by them; it's called Itambiro, which refers to a house of worship or healing. Omwikiriza is a believer in oneness in the Lord, Omuhereza is a person who serves God, Omukwenda is a senior leader of those who serve the Lord, and Bisaka is known as Omukama Ruhanga Owobusobozi Bisaka. It is this perceived "Africanism" that has followers viewing the faith of unity as a modern religion for Africans. "We don't have titles like canons, deacons, or bishops because these are western titles, not African," says Kaboyo.

People all over the world are immensely religious. Some follow Orthodox, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism. Each of them has their own beliefs; the Buddhist believes that human desire has to be subdued to enter nirvana, whereas Hindus accept the high religious concepts of Karma, reincarnation and samsara. The Chinese view the world as interplay between yin and yang, and Christians believe in Jesus and God.

Pet names are not allowed because they represent satan. Names like Adyeri are satanic names for a god called Kaikara; Ateenyi is the title of the python god of River Muziizi. They don't have first names and only go by one name

Restricting a man to marrying only one woman is to encourage prostitution. This is because those women who remain without husbands have to roam about looking for support.

God has several Major Spirits, and they know the way in which they work - there is the Lord God of Hosts, the Lord God of the Holiness of God, and finally, the Lord God of the Power of God, who happens to be Owobusobozi Bisaka.

They have their "Bible" called The Book of God of the Age of Oneness, written by their leader himself!

They worship every 2nd, 12th, and 22nd of the month, because those are the days on which the Lord God performs miracles of saving people from satan and from diseases.

They don't pray for the dead, because what concerns the dead is to do with God alone, not for you. No one can confess his dead friend's sins. All the believers bear one name - because from time immemorial, the name that comes from God is always one.

They don't allow the consumption of alcohol, because alcohol consumption has no dignity and doesn't allow control of temper.

They all wear white flowing robes while praying.

There is no such thing as a black mans religion or a white mans religion, there is only Gods word(The Bible)source of ALL truth and Jesus. If you are confused about any issue, what does the bible say about it?.Everything else is mans word made up for man, what you want to hear, not the TRUTH,which is why it is called divisive, not all people want to truely hear the truth, sadly only what they want to hear. For me TRUTH ABOVE EVERYTHING,even if some take offence.
