THE MMD has appointed the party chairperson for elections, Mike Mulongoti as the national campaign committee manager for its presidential candidate, acting President, Rupiah Banda.
MMD national secretary, Katele Kalumba said in a statement issued in Lusaka yesterday that party treasurer, Suresh Desai would be in charge of the finance committee of the national campaign committee.
Dr Kalumba said that MMD founder member, Mbita Chitala would be in charge of administrative and logistical issues of the campaign and MMD spokesperson, Bennie Tetamashimba has been appointed Mr Banda's election agent.
"The committee has been constituted and they will be working very closely with the office of the national secretary and the party chairman," Dr Kalumba said.
He said the national structure had been established and individual coordinators for provinces and other organs have been identified and the national secretary would soon be communicating with all of them.
"Other members of the strategic committee will be informed by the national secretary," he said.
Dr Kalumba said he believed that the campaign would be better coordinated between the campaign structures and the campaign organs and appealed to members and supporters to ensure that Mr Banda got a landslide victory.
He said the party was very confident that Mr Banda would win the forthcoming presidential election.
Zambia is expected to hold a presidential election following the death of President Mwanawasa in France from the effects of a severe stroke that he suffered in Egypt during the African Union (AU) summit.
According to the Republican Constitution, the country is supposed to hold elections within 90 days of the president's death on June 19 and the MMD last week adopted Mr Banda as its candidate.
Mr Mulongoti said that after the selection of Mr Banda as the presidential candidate, the MMD would now put the campaign machinery into gear.
Mr Mulongoti said the party would start by galvanising support from the constituencies, districts and provinces before taking Mr Banda around the country to introduce him to the people.
He said like any other party, the MMD was sure of winning the presidential election.
