9 September 2008

Large quantities of national dailies, weekly magazines and newspapers, as well as other publications, were yesterday, (Monday, September 8, 2008) impounded by officials of Calabar Urban Development Authority (CUDA) along Calabar-Ikom highway in Calabar the Cross River State capital.

Though reasons for the seizures were not made known to our correspondent at the time of filing this report, however, a source hinted that it may not be unconnected with the sale of newspapers and magazines on the highway.

Mr. Joseph Ukpabio, Sale Representative of Vanguard newspapers, who is the President of Print/Media Sales Representation Association, told newsmen in Calabar that they had got a report from vendors, that CUDA invaded their sale depots and impounded newspapers and magazines worth thousands of naira.

He lamented CUDA's action, saying that the association had not been given reasons for the impoundment of the newspapers hence they reported the matter to the correspondents.

They pleaded with the correspondents to do something to recover the papers from CUDA.

The Association, however, complained, that the seizure will affect the sale of the newspapers in the area.

Intervening, correspondents' representative, called the Executive Secretary of CUDA, Chief Elegance Edim, on telephone, who informed the group that the vendors were asked to stay away from selling their products on the highway, but they refused.

He said they were warned to stay away from the roads two weeks ago

Edim, however, promised to release the newspapers and magazines and other publications to the association, but warned the vendors from selling newspapers in the restricted areas.

At the time this report was filled, the association's officials and representatives of the Correspondents' Chapel, who went for the newspapers were yet to return with the seized papers.
