Liberia: IE Remembers Johnny Grant

8 September 2008

The Invincible Eleven Majestic Club (IE) has described former right full back, the late Johnny Grant as a wonderful footballer who at all times defended the cause of IE both on and off the pitch.

Mr. Grant died 28, Aug. 08 in the densely populated and football addicted community of West Point in Central Monrovia.

He began playing for IE in 1978 and retired from the club in 1984, after an illustrious spell that landed him into the national team, the Lone Star.

An IE Stalwart, Dennis Toe said the late Grant never found pleasure in letting attackers beat him easily.

He said owing to the aggressive play of the late Grant he earned the nickname "J. Blood".

Mr. Toe said the late defender was always committed to IE and to the Lone Star as well.

Mr. Grant commitment to IE led him in trouble in 1981 when he used his booth to hit referee Jacob Geto over protest.

The LFA barred the late Grant for time indefinite for his action.

Mr. Toe said one interesting thing about the late Grant, was his physical appearance citing that owing to his youthful appearance, Liberia registered Grant in the 1980s to partake in a regional tournament, but Guinea one of Liberia's opponents in the tournament found out that Grant exceeded the required age of 20.

The IE Majestic club has expressed their profound regret over Mr. Grant demise and has urged the family to take solace in the Lord. Grant who died in his mid-fifties was a father of five children.

The team has said that they will do all in their weak ways to ensure that Mr. Grant has a befitting burial.

The body of the late football star would be interred at the J.C.N. Howard Cemetery following funeral rites at the Sacred Heart Cathedral on Broad Street, where the late football icon regularly worshiped during his life.
